| Customer Reviews: A Fantastic, Interesting educational tool July 12, 2010 J. Couchman (UK) When I was a little girl I remember that my mum brought me a bright red Early Learning Centre microscope and slides which I absolutely loved and never put down! In fact I think I used it so much that it broke and I was so upset that she had to buy me a new one. Several decades and a science degree later I was looking for something similar for my own children (though they were a little older so needed something more advanced) so brought them this Celestron microscope.
I must say that we were all very impressed. Despite what I read in the other reviews, I have had no problems with clearly viewing specimens. It must be noted, however, that it does sometimes take a little time to adjust the microscope to your eyes and focus in (as it does with most microscopes). In fact I remember it taking a long time at school and uni to get it just right, longer than this one.
The slides that are included are very good - the bee's wing was particulalry interesting. Though you can also purchase addition prepared slides if you don't want to bother preparing specimens yourself. With regards to what you can view through it though - pretty much anything. We have looked at ants, flower petals and leaves to name just a few. I really do think it is fantastic as it introduces kids to the fun side of science which is important as so many children are losing interested these days.
The digital camera is a much added bonus. I have never used one before yet I think it is brilliant. It has taken some fantastic pictures that we can keep and that the kids can show their friends when they come round or even print out and stick into projects for school.
I cannot praise it enough.
Not as expected.. April 6, 2009 K. Brown 9 out of 34 found this review helpful
It wasn't quite as I expected... In some ways it was too powerful for what i wanted. i.e for looking at very very small items it's fine but for looking at larger objects (such as a diamond I wished to examine) there just isn't enough range to get a focused image.
It's not particulary easy to focus - not impossible but does take some getting used too.
It doesnt even deserve 1 star July 10, 2010 Will I advise you not to buy this microscope, it is a complete waste of money. You get blurred lacking colour images even when in 'focus' looking through the viewfinder and the digital camera and its software are absolutely awful, the software is impossible to install bearing in mind it crashes every time you click on it and if you are able to install it when you click on 'VP-EYE' half the time it doesn't detect your camera and even if it does when you go to click view it freezes and crashes your computer. Also the tacky plastic body is of rubbish quality and the light doesn't stay still on its tilt. Also the eyepiece has such a miniscule hole to look through its hard to even see what you are looking at.
