Olympus X-42 November 1, 2009 Spider Monkey (UK) 55 out of 56 found this review helpful
This `Olympus X-42' is a small attractive camera and incredible value for money. To find 12 mega pixels, 16 face recognition, 5X zoom and a 2.7 screen is impressive stuff, but when you factor in the low price it ends up being nothing short of outstanding. This takes AA batteries and whilst this makes it slightly thicker than other cameras with internal rechargeable batteries, I find it fits better in the hand this way; companies can make things so small they aren't practical anymore and this camera is just right in my opinion. There is a `quick start' guide in the box, as well as a more comprehensive manual on an enclosed CD-ROM, but to be honest this is so self explanatory and easy to navigate around that it is very quick to get up and running. The manual is good to fully utilise the features this camera offers, but if you want to just point and click then this is great for that as well. There is also some software included so you can transfer and manipulate photos on you computer more easily and whilst basic, is a pretty good bit of kit. I'd recommend you buy an external memory card to go with this and there is also an adaptor in the box for micro sd cards. You don't get a case included in the price and it is well worth investing in one of these, but this is a minor niggle and not unusual these days. The camera body seems a little lightweight, being plastic, but it ensure the camera isn't too heavy and I have carried this around all day with no real problems. All in all this is an excellent entry level digital camera and much better value than many other cameras out there in a similar price range. It is well worth considering.
Overall great for the price November 22, 2009 M. Woolridge 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I wanted a cheap camera that still produces good photos and this does the job! It is very plastic-ky material and dependent on the light source the pictures can look a bit grainy. It's a great size for taking on a night out or sticking in your pocket and despite taking AA batteries, is light-weigth too.

Olympus X-42 12MP Camera - Black review January 4, 2010 Mrs. Caroline S. Moore (Farnborough , England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This product is very good as it takes good quality images and good quality videos's. It also ha good batery life and many differant settings and the camera iss very easy to use and it light weight and has a big screen. The only drawback is that without a memory card inserted the videos on last 54 seconds but memory cards are very cheap so this camera is very good and is worth the money i paid for it
Not a bad little camera for the price September 4, 2009 J. R. Mahoney (Manchester, UK) 87 out of 90 found this review helpful
I've been into digital photography for a while and experienced a fair few different manufacturers' cameras so feel fairly qualified to objectively review this thing.
Being a guy mine is the black, but only the pink one seems to be here. First thing that struck me with this is how lightweight, plasticky and flimsy it seemed out of the box - i'm not saying i'd like a brick but this just screamed "cheap and nasty" at me rather than "lightweight." But i can live with the fact it's not metal and reassuringly sturdy.
But onto the pics it takes - in my experience olympus lenses seem to be the top of the range and this takes a credible photo, although obviously the sharpness, detail, contrast etc. is going to be down to the lighting, your camera settings and your experience as a photographer. Even so after a day experimenting i can't really fault the pics (especially impressive at the full 12mp), but the landscape setting didn't seem particularly great. Good to see that the settings can be overridden somewhat so you can tinker with your ISO etc. if you think you can do better than the presets.
Onboard software is pretty sparse. Very rare to find a 5x optical (NOT digital) zoom in this pricerange - i must admit this is the main reason i chose it, i'm very surprised they don't use it as more of a selling point. When i saw it had a 2.7" screen that was more than enough to hook me (a bit bigger than your average screen for a camera like this).
In summary - a steal as a 12mp camera with 5x optical zoom and large-ish screen for sub-£100, but bear in mind you're paying for the lens, the 12mp capabilities, biggish screen and the zoom and not a lot else.
